Liver disease is best understood by cause, fibrosis stage, compensation status and complications
Abnormal liver enzymes are only one part of hepatology. Clinically important liver disease may involve steatosis, inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis, portal hypertension, impaired synthetic function, cholestasis, encephalopathy, ascites, renal dysfunction, viral infection, alcohol-associated injury, drug-induced injury, inherited disease or malignancy. Patients with similar laboratory values can have very different prognoses depending on the underlying disease and whether hepatic decompensation has occurred.
This redesigned portal brings GlobalRPh’s established liver scores and medication references together with newer MASLD/MASH material, current viral-hepatitis resources, cirrhosis management links, liver transplantation guidance and hepatocellular-carcinoma content. Older calculators remain available while we progressively update the formulas, terminology and clinical context around them.

From NAFLD to MASLD
GlobalRPh’s 2026 review examines the transition from NAFLD/NASH terminology to MASLD/MASH and the practical implications for metabolic risk assessment, fibrosis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular-carcinoma risk. It is now the natural starting point for the metabolic-liver-disease section.

The liver-allocation MELD calculation changed in July 2023. The older GlobalRPh MELD and MELD-Na calculators remain available as historical tools while we rebuild them, but transplant-allocation decisions should be verified with the current official calculator.

The old Hepatology portal printed a stand-alone lactulose dose block directly on the landing page. The revised page replaces that static block with medication references and current guidance so dosing can be reviewed in clinical context.

Building a dedicated Hepatology video collection
The existing Hepatology portal has an empty video section, and the current GlobalRPh master video library does not yet contain a dedicated Hepatology category. Rather than label loosely related videos as liver-specific, this portal identifies the subjects we plan to develop or surface as the video library expands.
Current destination
GlobalRPh’s main video library contains related Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Nutrition, Oncology and medication-safety videos. Until a dedicated liver collection is created, the portal links to the full library rather than presenting crossover videos as dedicated Hepatology content.

Planned GlobalRPh updates
Areas we’re continuing to improve in the Hepatology library
GlobalRPh’s hepatology calculator collection has been useful for many years, but transplant scoring, viral-hepatitis treatment, MASLD pharmacotherapy, portal-hypertension care and liver-transplant guidance have changed substantially. As we work through this section, we plan to update the clinical logic, terminology and references before redesigning each individual page.
Pages we plan to refresh
- MELD / MELD-Na: this is the highest-priority calculator update in the section. We plan to replace the old transplant-allocation framework with the current OPTN MELD formula, clearly label historical formulas, verify input boundaries, and update the explanation of how allocation scoring differs from general prognosis.
- Child-Turcotte-Pugh: we plan to preserve this widely used score while clarifying its subjective ascites/encephalopathy components, current uses, limitations, and relationship to MELD and newer prognostic methods.
- ABIC / AHHS / GAHS / Maddrey / Lille: we plan to update terminology to alcohol-associated hepatitis, clarify when each score is calculated, separate prognosis from treatment decisions, update steroid-response context, and connect the scores to current ALD guidance.
- Anti-Hepatitis Agents: this is a major medication-table update. The current page still contains multiple historical or discontinued HCV agents. We plan to rebuild it around current chronic HBV therapy, current direct-acting HCV regimens, pregnancy/coinfection considerations, renal dosing, drug interactions and modern AASLD/IDSA guidance.
- Interferons: we plan to reposition this from a central viral-hepatitis treatment table to a historical/current-indication reference, reflecting the much smaller role of interferon in modern hepatitis C care.
- Hepatic encephalopathy: we plan to create a dedicated GlobalRPh page that integrates precipitating-factor review, lactulose, rifaximin, recurrence prevention, medication contributors, nutrition and current guideline context instead of relying on a dose block embedded in the portal.
- Ascites / portal hypertension: we plan to build a dedicated cirrhosis-complications page covering diuretic therapy, sodium intake, paracentesis, SBP, nonselective beta blockers, variceal prevention, TIPS, renal dysfunction and transplant referral.
- MASLD / MASH: we plan to build a permanent clinical hub that combines metabolic-risk assessment, noninvasive fibrosis testing, FIB-4, elastography pathways, lifestyle therapy, resmetirom, semaglutide, diabetes/obesity crossover, cardiovascular risk and HCC/fibrosis follow-up.
- HCC: we plan to expand the current scattered oncology articles into a hepatology-facing HCC reference covering surveillance, diagnostic imaging, liver function, transplant/locoregional options, systemic therapy and multidisciplinary decision-making.
- Acute liver failure / acetaminophen injury: we plan to connect the existing acetylcysteine and toxicology material to a dedicated acute-liver-failure workflow with early transplant-center referral and current AASLD guidance.
- Drug-induced liver injury: we plan to add a dedicated DILI reference covering medication and supplement history, biochemical injury pattern, alternative diagnoses, causality concepts and the AASLD practice guidance.
- Hemochromatosis / iron overload: we plan to connect the newer GlobalRPh hemochromatosis article with a practical hepatic iron-overload pathway and Hematology cross-links.
- Transplant resources: we plan to add a clearer liver-transplant center covering referral, candidate evaluation, allocation, immunosuppression monitoring, infection prevention, renal complications and post-transplant medication interactions.
- Laboratory interpretation: we plan to build a more useful liver-test framework distinguishing hepatocellular injury, cholestasis, synthetic function, bilirubin patterns and when normal transaminases do not exclude advanced liver disease.

Why older liver scores and medication pages remain linked during the update process
Some of GlobalRPh’s oldest hepatology pages remain useful as historical calculators, medication references or educational tools even though current practice has moved forward. We are keeping these links active while updating the formulas, terminology, product availability and guideline context so longstanding GlobalRPh resources are not lost during the modernization process.
