How MusicAtlas works
Know what a catalog year, a collection choice and a background source actually mean.
Annual 150s
Every year from 1960 through 2025 contains 150 curated selections. The underlying sources include U.S. year-end chart transcriptions, supplied selections and UK chart appearances. Chronology-screened editorial replacements exclude identified old returns and premature assignments; replacements are not assigned invented chart ranks. This is not an official published ranking from 1 to 150. A displayed source rank is separate from the order in this app.
The annual year is a collection or chart association. It is not automatically the first release date, composition date or recording date. A song may appear in more than one annual list.
Country 300, Motown 150 and soul favorites
The focused collections begin with the identifiable screenshot suggestions and are filled with a curated selection of additional recordings. The country list includes country-crossover material. Motown refers to the label family and the relevant recording era, not every soul recording by a famous singer. Related soul favorites have a separate companion list.
No official all-time ranking is claimed. Many collection dates are the earliest retained annual association; some dates come from a cited recording or compilation source. Unknown dates stay unknown. Read the year basis on the detail page.
Classical 300
Explore 300 curated classical works and cycles through composer, form and era filters. Whole symphonies, operas and cycles count as one entry each. Each work has historical background, an editorial listening guide and source links; documented inspiration appears where the evidence supports it.
Work dates identify composition, premiere or publication. Versions, incomplete works and uncertain dates have separate notes. These entries do not select a particular recording or performer.
Screenshot records and uncertain credits
The supplied file-list screenshots were transcribed and reconciled. Repeated titles and artist-credit variants were consolidated where appropriate. No audio was supplied or fingerprinted. Ambiguous credits remain in Screenshot review rather than being silently replaced by a familiar song. The recovery package preserves every screenshot row and its destination.
Inspiration is not the same as a plausible story
A researched songwriting account describes an origin or influence supported by its source. Recording background may instead describe collaborators, an album or a session. Supplied notes are attributed and labeled unverified. Chart-context-only entries do not pretend to establish a songwriter's intentions.
New source-specific notes draw on artist and label histories, the Motown Museum, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, official artist catalogs and identified chart pages. Source links state their scope. Most genre tags remain editorial discovery aids rather than independently established song classifications.
Search, discovery and saved songs
Basic search checks titles and artists. Advanced search can use exact phrases, separate title and artist fields, year ranges, genres, moods and background text. The one-result-per-recording option hides repeated annual appearances without deleting them.
The daily selection changes on the UTC date and is not an anniversary feature. Shuffle chooses a new mix from the selected filters. Related-song suggestions use artist, genre and nearby catalog years; they do not use a personal listening history.
Saved songs use first-party browser cookies and need no registration. The shortlist holds up to 75 songs and can be exported. There is no cross-device account synchronization. Clearing cookies clears the list. Advertising providers may use their own cookies under the site's consent arrangements; the shortlist is not a claim that the entire site is tracking-free.
Video searches
YouTube links include the title and artist and open an external search in a new tab or window. Searches are not authenticated official videos, and no audio or video is hosted here. There is no autoplay.
Full lyric text is not included. Older lyrics links remain usable and lead to available song information.
Source and correction records
Original yearly HTML files, screenshot inputs, source mappings and correction logs are retained in the private complete/recovery archive. Public entries retain source links and status. The annual dataset is not a fully independently verified historical encyclopedia; imported annual assignments and notes remain open to further review.
Rap and alternative collections
Each main collection contains 300 curated selections, not an official ranked Top 300. Supplied screenshot titles have priority; duplicate rows are consolidated. Additional entries come from the existing annual catalog, documented artist catalogs and the Smithsonian retrospective track list. The selected repertoire is editorial, and source availability is not a popularity score.
Named edits, remixes and re-recordings remain separately accessible in version collections. Pop and R&B crossover favorites have a companion. Uncertain audio credits remain in Screenshot review. No audio was supplied, so tags alone cannot identify an exact master.
Unknown years and incomplete inspiration research are reported, not replaced by guessed dates or narratives. All entries have a background panel; many panels contain only attributed notes or catalog context.
Release-aware annual lists
Annual listening lists organize curated listening and chart associations. A list year may follow the first recording release, including a later single campaign. The separate release line and source note identify first availability; a notice marks a verified release that differs materially from a retained annual placement. Later reissues and renewed popularity do not reset the original recording date. New covers, live recordings and re-recordings keep their own identities. Dates may be source-checked, reported but unverified, conflicting, or not yet established. These are curated listening lists, not official revised chart rankings.
Additional recordings and date-review records remain separately accessible. Old links and saved recordings are preserved where their identities can be reconciled. A date filter excludes records whose release date is not established.
