Original album: The Velvet Rope

The Velvet Rope - original album and featured credits
The original 1997 program identifies Together Again, solo I Get Lonely, and Got 'Til It's Gone featuring Q-Tip and Joni Mitchell. The last uses Mitchell's sampled vocal rather than a newly recorded duet; the source explicitly describes that contribution. | Reviewed 2026-10-17

In the yearly lists

This selected recording is beyond the current yearly lists.

The selected original 1997 solo album performance is different from the retained 1998 entry-44355c805bd285fd / rec-067afb3259152a2c explicitly credited Janet featuring Blackstreet. Virgin's separate TNT Remix Edit identifies the Blackstreet guest performance. The actual candidate is reviewed and excluded as a distinct recording, so the solo selection remains beyond the annual lists; no provisional match is needed.

I Get Lonely - separately credited Blackstreet TNT Remix Edit
The Virgin version catalog explicitly identifies Blackstreet on the TNT Remix Edit, separate from the original solo album recording. Its inherited October 1997 album date does not establish the remix's first release. This source supports the performance distinction, not a new first-release date. | Reviewed 2026-10-17

ARTIST BACKGROUND

About Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson's recording career took a decisive turn with Control in 1986, made with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Its mixture of funk, synthesizers, dance rhythms and vocal arrangements established a musical identity distinct from her famous family. Rhythm Nation 1814 followed in 1989, combining dance music with social subject matter. Her later albums continued to explore R&B and pop, while choreography and music videos became closely connected parts of her recorded and live work.
