ARTIST BACKGROUND

About Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson's recording career took a decisive turn with Control in 1986, made with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Its mixture of funk, synthesizers, dance rhythms and vocal arrangements established a musical identity distinct from her famous family. Rhythm Nation 1814 followed in 1989, combining dance music with social subject matter. Her later albums continued to explore R&B and pop, while choreography and music videos became closely connected parts of her recorded and live work.

About this artist collection

The existing solo ID and previously published artist profile are retained. Michael Jackson stays credited on Scream. The annual Janet featuring Blackstreet credit is reviewed as Janet Jackson's primary-artist collaboration, while its guest remix remains distinct from the selected solo I Get Lonely. Got 'Til It's Gone retains Q-Tip and Joni Mitchell's featured credit, with Mitchell's sampled vocal contribution distinguished from a new duet performance.

First released means the earliest documented official public release of the selected recording. A year-only date does not assert a month or day. Later singles, chart years, compilations, remasters and reissues do not replace that date.
