ARTIST BACKGROUND

About Ray Charles

Ray Charles was a singer, pianist and bandleader whose recordings connected blues, gospel phrasing, jazz and popular song. His early Atlantic singles range from the piano-driven Mess Around to the vocal exchanges of What'd I Say. Orchestral albums and the two Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music volumes broadened his settings without smoothing away his distinctive vocal grain. Later studio work continued to pair that expressive voice with country, soul and familiar standards.

About this artist collection

The existing Ray Charles singer-pianist ID is retained. The Ray Charles Singers is a separate catalog entity and is not a performer alias. Betty Carter retains the duet credit; the original Here We Go Again solo performance is distinct from the much later Norah Jones duet.

First released means the earliest documented official public release of the selected recording. A year-only date does not assert a month or day. Later singles, chart years, compilations, remasters and reissues do not replace that date.
