ARTIST BACKGROUND

About Sam Cooke

Sam Cooke grew up in Chicago after his family moved from Mississippi, and his early singing developed in gospel groups, including the Soul Stirrers. You Send Me brought him major solo success in 1957, followed by a pop and soul career that included Cupid and Chain Gang. He also worked as a songwriter and music-business entrepreneur, founding SAR Records with J.W. Alexander. His solo recordings and the Soul Stirrers' group performances remain different parts of that history.

About this artist collection

Uses Sam Cooke's existing annual solo credit ID. His recordings with the Soul Stirrers remain a separate group identity. Original studio singles are distinguished from later concert recordings, remixes and single editions; no duet billing is invented for a backing voice.

First released means the earliest documented official public release of the selected recording. A year-only date does not assert a month or day. Later singles, chart years, compilations, remasters and reissues do not replace that date.
