ARTIST BACKGROUND

About Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash's early Sun recordings paired his voice and acoustic guitar with the spare accompaniment of guitarist Luther Perkins and bassist Marshall Grant. After moving to Columbia, he recorded country songs, gospel and concept albums drawing on American history and folk traditions. His prison concert albums at Folsom and San Quentin became major parts of that career. Later work with Rick Rubin opened another recording chapter, while collaborations such as the Highwaymen remained separately credited group projects.

About this artist collection

The existing Johnny Cash solo identity is retained. Original Sun labels credit Cash with Tennessee Two; the backing band remains in those recording credits. Jackson keeps June Carter as co-lead vocalist. No Highwaymen group recording is treated as a solo recording.

First released means the earliest documented official public release of the selected recording. A year-only date does not assert a month or day. Later singles, chart years, compilations, remasters and reissues do not replace that date.
