ARTIST BACKGROUND

About Marvin Gaye

Marvin Gaye was a singer and drummer whose Motown recordings moved from compact dance singles to extended soul and funk settings. His early lead vocals combine a rough edge with precise phrasing, while the duets with Tammi Terrell and Kim Weston reveal an agile musical conversation. What's Going On gives his layered voice a more spacious setting; later albums including I Want You and Midnight Love continue to reshape the balance between vocal intimacy and rhythm.

About this artist collection

The retained Marvin Gaye identity is preserved. The Tammi Terrell joint credit has retained annual entries and is explicitly linked for eligibility. The original Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston recording keeps its full duet credit and focused catalog identity, but that focused-only joint ID does not establish annual eligibility. Later sampled guest releases and other artists' versions are not solo aliases.

First released means the earliest documented official public release of the selected recording. A year-only date does not assert a month or day. Later singles, chart years, compilations, remasters and reissues do not replace that date.
