Symphony No. 4 in G major
Gustav Mahler
Work background
Researched classical background
Mahler built his Fourth Symphony around a pre-existing song that presents a child's vision of heavenly life. The soprano enters only in the finale, after three instrumental movements have prepared its musical world. Sleigh bells, dance-like passages, and an unusually tuned solo violin create shifting perspectives. The apparently simple surface contains interruptions and changes of character that complicate any purely idyllic reading.
Inspiration and creative background
The Wunderhorn song Das himmlische Leben supplies the finale's text and important musical material.
