Symphony No. 9
Gustav Mahler
Work background
Researched classical background
Mahler's Ninth surrounds two more animated middle movements with exceptionally spacious outer movements. Dance rhythms become unsettled in the Landler, while the Rondo-Burleske uses tightly interwoven lines and sharp contrasts. The final Adagio gradually reduces its activity and volume. Although frequently heard as a farewell, the music's details support several interpretations, and the work should not be reduced to a literal medical or personal narrative.
