Symphony No. 10 in F-sharp major (unfinished)
Gustav Mahler
Work background
Researched classical background
Mahler left his Tenth as a five-movement project in varying states of completion. The opening Adagio is far more fully worked out than most of what follows. Performances of all five movements therefore depend on posthumous editorial realization, including the performing version associated with Deryck Cooke. The surviving work and any particular realization need to be identified separately.
A listening guide
The opening Adagio contrasts a searching viola line with fuller orchestral passages.
Listening suggestions are editorial guides to the music.
