RELEASE DATE & LIST YEAR

Release: 1995

Release: 1995Source checked | Recent carryover

V3.6 reconciles the original release year with the reviewed Artist Essentials entry for this exact retained recording ID. Year precision is used; an album-first release is not silently replaced by a later single, reissue or annual-list year. The original recording is documented in the 1995 release history of Daydream. Only year precision is assigned; later singles, charts, remasters and live versions do not establish its first release. The selected original recording is documented on Daydream (1995). Year precision does not substitute a later single, video, remaster or annual-list date.

The large badge identifies this listening list, not a newly issued recording. Later reissues and renewed chart popularity do not replace an original release date. How years are assigned.

Owner-supplied release annotations
Reported dates in 1996.html, 1996.html. Not independently established; neighboring dates can reflect album/single or regional differences.

Daydream - official original duet program
The original track list names One Sweet Day with Boyz II Men. The current storefront shipping date is not the original release date.

Columbia/Legacy - original Daydream year
The label explicitly identifies Daydream as a 1995 album separately from its 2020 reissue. Session and archive-release dates in the announcement do not date the original duet.

Daydream - official original album track list
The original program lists the solo Fantasy, Always Be My Baby and One Sweet Day with Boyz II Men; the dub interlude is a separate item. The original 1995 album year is independent of the storefront shipping date.

Daydream - Columbia/Legacy original album and alternate-version review
Explicitly identifies the original 1995 album and separates it from Fantasy with O.D.B., Always Be My Baby with Da Brat and Xscape, club mixes, later live releases and writing-session demos. This anniversary page establishes version scope; its 2026 publication and newly released archive performances do not date the selected originals.

Mariah Carey original album years - Columbia/Legacy and UMG catalog announcement
The label explicitly separates original album years in parentheses from 2020-2021 reissue dates: debut 1990, Emotions 1991, Unplugged 1992, Music Box 1993, Merry Christmas 1994, Daydream 1995, Butterfly 1997, Rainbow 1999, Charmbracelet 2002, Mimi 2005, E=MC2 2008 and Caution 2018. It also expressly places All I Want for Christmas Is You on the original 1994 holiday album. Recording-session years on The Rarities and new reissue dates are not used for selected-song dates.

BEHIND THE SONG

Inspiration and background

Documented songwriting inspiration

After losing her friend and collaborator David Cole, Carey began reflecting on bereavement with Walter Afanasieff. She left the idea open for a collaboration with Boyz II Men. The resulting song expresses grief and hope of reunion, drawing on losses experienced by its writers and the wider AIDS epidemic.
