Aswad developed in London's Ladbroke Grove neighborhood, bringing roots reggae into contact with dub, dancehall, pop and R&B. The group's early lineup included Brinsley Forde, George Oban, Angus Gaye, Courtney Hemmings and Donald Griffiths, with Tony Robinson joining as the personnel changed. The self-titled debut appeared in 1976. Later projects included A New Chapter of Dub and Distant Thunder, the latter containing Don't Turn Around and introducing the band to a broader pop audience.
