John Mayer combines pop songwriting with guitar playing rooted in blues, soul and rock. His album catalog developed through Room for Squares and Battle Studies, then explored more country and roots-oriented arrangements on Born and Raised and Paradise Valley. In 2015 he joined surviving Grateful Dead members in Dead & Company, giving his improvisational playing a separate group setting. New Light later returned him to a brighter, dance-influenced pop recording style.
