Inspiration and background
Documented songwriting inspiration
Elton's official history traces this song to a conversation with Long John Baldry at London's Bag O'Nails pub. Baldry urged the conflicted young musician to reconsider an impending marriage and protect his future. The episode later became part of the autobiographical Captain Fantastic album.
Evidence scope: Official artist history identifies the Baldry conversation as the song's inspiration. The Captain Fantastic studio history separately identifies the album as autobiographical.
