ARTIST BACKGROUND

About Gladys Knight

Song-specific inspiration or recording background is not established for this entry. This sourced artist profile provides career context.

Gladys Knight began singing gospel as a child in Georgia before becoming the lead voice of the Pips, a group with family connections. Their harmonies and choreography framed recordings including I Heard It Through the Grapevine and Midnight Train to Georgia. Knight also developed a separate solo catalog through albums such as Good Woman and At Last. Duets with Ray Charles and other performers, screen appearances and a run in Smokey Joe's Cafe extended her work beyond the group's repertoire.
