Inspiration and background
Researched recording background
Seal recalled creating the early demo while learning to use a four-track recorder in the late 1980s. Unable to play an instrument then, he layered his voice to imitate an orchestra. He put the tape aside until Trevor Horn encouraged him to revisit it for his second album; they recorded the released version at Sarm West in London.
Evidence scope: Direct accounts in episode 250, pages 0-3, establish the vocal-orchestra demo, its revival and the London recording session.

Earlier note and its recorded status
Earlier status: Researched recording background. This earlier wording is retained as historical context; the reviewed account above is the current summary.
Seal wrote the song in 1987 but initially set the tape aside. He later presented it to Trevor Horn for his second album. Its use in Batman Forever brought a renewed audience in 1995; the film association came after the song was written and should not be mistaken for its original inspiration.
