About Beastie Boys
Song-specific inspiration or recording background is not established for this entry. This sourced artist profile provides career context.
The Beastie Boys began in New York's hardcore punk scene before developing a rap style that retained the energy of rock performance. Licensed to Ill placed rapping alongside conspicuous guitar sounds. Paul's Boutique expanded their sampling approach, while the 1990s brought a renewed emphasis on playing instruments as well as making beats. Albums including Ill Communication and Hello Nasty show the group's range across hip-hop, funk and electronic textures. Their writing also moved beyond early provocation toward more socially engaged material.
