Inspiration and background
Documented songwriting inspiration
Clapton began the song after the death of his young son Conor, while working on music for the film Rush. He asked Will Jennings to help complete it despite its intensely personal subject. The studio soundtrack recording and the later Unplugged performance are different recordings of the same composition.
