Inspiration and background
Documented songwriting inspiration
The hook began as a background idea for another song. Hanson first recorded a slower version before the Dust Brothers helped turn it into the familiar upbeat single. Zac Hanson has explained that the song concerns holding onto what matters as time passes, with an influence from earlier vocal groups.
