The 5th Dimension combined carefully arranged vocal harmony with elements of pop, soul and jazz. The classic lineup included Marilyn McCoo, Billy Davis Jr., Florence LaRue, LaMonte McLemore and Ron Townson. Work with Johnny Rivers's Soul City label introduced a repertoire drawing on distinctive contemporary songwriters. Jimmy Webb's Up, Up and Away and Laura Nyro's Stoned Soul Picnic and Sweet Blindness became central recordings. Later material, including One Less Bell to Answer, continued the emphasis on expressive ensemble singing.
