Gary Allan developed his country singing in California bars, drawing on a musical family and the region's Bakersfield tradition. His 1996 debut, Used Heart for Sale, included Her Man and paired traditional country sounds with contemporary production touches. Smoke Rings in the Dark followed as another defining album. Later work included Living Hard, during a period when Allan contributed more of his own songwriting while continuing to develop the sound of his recordings.
