About Jimmy Smith
Jimmy Smith helped establish the Hammond organ as a major jazz instrument, combining bass movement, chords and melodic improvisation within one performance. His sound brought blues, gospel and R&B into a bebop-informed setting. Blue Note recordings such as The Sermon and Back at the Chicken Shack document that approach, while later Verve projects expanded into big-band arrangements and collaborations with guitarist Wes Montgomery.
