Release evidence and recording details

First released: 1964 (year verified)

The official discography explicitly dates the first US Decca single to December 1964, before the January 1965 UK release. The official anniversary history corroborates that order. This is release evidence, not the earlier studio-session date; only the year is asserted.

Original single: I Can't Explain

I Can't Explain - The Who official original single entry
Explicitly gives the US Decca release as December 1964 and the UK Brunswick release as January 1965. The earlier US first-release year is used, not the November 1964 studio session or the later UK association. The first US title typo is noted by the source but is not added as an unobserved catalog alias. | Reviewed 2026-10-17

I Can't Explain - official 50th anniversary history
January 2015 retrospective states that the single was released in the US a few weeks before the January 1965 UK release, corroborating the explicit December 1964 US discography entry. UK day labels differ, so no exact day is adopted. | Reviewed 2026-10-17

ARTIST BACKGROUND

About The Who

The Who moved between concise singles and larger connected album works. Tommy appeared in 1969, while Pete Townshend's Lifehouse project provided the starting point for Who's Next in 1971. The double album Quadrophenia followed in 1973. After Keith Moon's death, the group recorded Face Dances with Kenney Jones on drums. Roger Daltrey and Townshend continued the studio catalog with later musicians, including on WHO in 2019. The official discography distinguishes those group recordings from demos, member solo work and later concert versions.
