ARTIST BACKGROUND

About Carpenters

The Carpenters were the sibling partnership of Richard and Karen Carpenter, born in Connecticut and raised partly in Downey, California. Richard played piano and Karen drums in their early trio before both worked in the group Spectrum. Their duo recordings reached A&M after Herb Alpert heard a demo. The album Offering began that label career, followed by (They Long to Be) Close to You and a run of 1970s pop records.

About this artist collection

The original recording credit Carpenters refers to the retained The Carpenters duo identity. The spelling is explicitly reviewed, not a new act. Karen Carpenter and Richard Carpenter solo recordings remain separate. Where lead vocals or instrumental parts were rerecorded, the selected edition is named.

First released means the earliest documented official public release of the selected recording. A year-only date does not assert a month or day. Later singles, chart years, compilations, remasters and reissues do not replace that date.
