Symphony in G minor
Ernest John Moeran
Work background
Researched classical background
Moeran's four-movement symphony brings together broad orchestral writing, a slow Lento, a quick Vivace and a finale that begins slowly before accelerating. He composed much of it in County Kerry and specifically connected the slow movement's material with the dunes and marshes of East Norfolk. These geographic associations need not be turned into a detailed invented narrative.
Inspiration and creative background
Moeran identified East Norfolk's dunes and marshes as the setting in which the second movement's material was conceived.
