Symphony No. 2 in D major
Johannes Brahms
Work background
Researched classical background
Brahms wrote his Second Symphony during a summer stay at Portschach in 1877. Its opening bass figure supplies material that recurs in different forms across the first movement. The four movements allow lyrical passages and darker low-brass sonorities to coexist; the relatively light third movement is followed by a finale that builds toward a brilliant full-orchestra ending.
