Symphony No. 3 in E major
Max Bruch
Work background
Researched classical background
Bruch wrote his Third Symphony in response to a New York commission and later revised it. Its four movements continue his interest in large orchestral forms alongside the concertos for which he became better known. The symphony's history therefore includes both its original early-1880s conception and changes made after its first performances, a distinction that matters when identifying editions.
