Pictures at an Exhibition
Modest Mussorgsky
Work background
Researched classical background
Mussorgsky responded to a memorial exhibition of works by his friend Viktor Hartmann with a sequence of musical pictures. Recurring Promenade passages suggest movement between exhibits, while the individual scenes differ sharply in scale and character. The original score is for solo piano. Ravel's celebrated orchestration is one of several later versions, so recordings can present materially different instrumental colors.
Inspiration and creative background
The memorial exhibition of Viktor Hartmann's art provided the specific subjects and occasion for the suite.
