Symphony No. 3 in C major
Jean Sibelius
Work background
Researched classical background
Sibelius reduced the orchestral weight and number of movements in his Third Symphony. The opening movement is followed by a measured, dance-like slow movement; the finale begins with fragmentary scherzo material that gradually coalesces into a broad closing idea. Rather than presenting a separate scherzo and finale, the work allows one function to develop into the other.
