Symphony No. 7, Angel of Light
Einojuhani Rautavaara
Work background
Researched classical background
Rautavaara linked his angel series to Rilke's Duino Elegies. In the Seventh, a hymn-like theme recurs through all four movements; a fast second movement leads directly into a dreamlike third. The composer treated the angel image as a verbal stimulus for abstract music and explicitly rejected a literal story. The score was commissioned by the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra.
Inspiration and creative background
Rautavaara traced the angel series to Rilke and described its titles as the impulses that generated the music, without a literal narrative programme.
