Symphony No. 2, The Age of Anxiety
Leonard Bernstein
Work background
Researched classical background
Bernstein responded to W. H. Auden's long poem by creating a symphony with a major part for solo piano. Its two broad parts contain several linked sections, including variations, a dirge and the rhythmically active Masque. The piano acts within the drama rather than following a conventional concerto layout. Bernstein revised its role in the ending in 1965.
Inspiration and creative background
W. H. Auden's The Age of Anxiety prompted Bernstein's musical exploration of its characters and search for faith.
