Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major
Franz Schubert
Work background
Researched classical background
Schubert wrote his Fifth Symphony for modest orchestral forces, omitting clarinets, trumpets and timpani. Its four movements reflect his admiration for Mozart while retaining Schubert's own melodic and harmonic turns. The absence of a grand slow introduction and the clear wind-and-string textures make its scale notably different from the larger symphonies he would compose later.
