Symphony No. 3 in C major, Sinfonie Singuliere
Franz Berwald
Work background
Researched classical background
Berwald completed Sinfonie Singuliere in 1845, but it did not receive its first performance until 1905. The three-movement design has an unusual centre: a scherzo is inserted inside the Adagio, after which the slow music returns. This arrangement gives the middle movement contrasting internal functions and helps explain the work's particularly individual place among Romantic symphonies.
