Symphony No. 4
Witold Lutoslawski
Work background
Researched classical background
Lutoslawski wrote his last symphony for the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Its two connected sections follow a plan in which an exploratory opening prepares a more continuous principal movement. A clarinet melody alternates with quicker interludes before the larger argument unfolds. The score concentrates its climaxes and then dissolves into recollections before a brief final coda.
Inspiration and creative background
Lutoslawski described his two-part design as preparation followed by the main musical event, balancing the listener's expectations.
