Symphony No. 2
Charles Ives
Work background
Researched classical background
Ives's Second Symphony places American songs and hymns inside a design that also recalls the European orchestral tradition. It has five movements, with slow sections framing or preparing faster ones. The music circulated long before its first public performance, which Leonard Bernstein led in 1951. Its familiar tunes are transformed and combined rather than presented as a simple medley.
