Symphony No. 103 in E-flat major, Drum Roll
Joseph Haydn
Work background
Researched classical background
Haydn begins his penultimate symphony with an unaccompanied timpani roll, followed by a dark introduction in the low instruments. That introductory world returns within the first movement instead of simply disappearing when the Allegro starts. The slow movement alternates related minor and major material, and the finale develops a lively tune after an opening horn call.
A listening guide
Notice the return of slow introductory material inside the first movement.
