Cello Concerto in E Minor, Op. 85
Edward Elgar
Work background
Researched classical background
Elgar's Cello Concerto opens with an exposed solo declaration, giving the cello an immediate dramatic presence. Four movements contrast broad reflection with quicker, more fragile activity, and music from earlier in the work reappears near the end. The relatively transparent orchestral writing keeps the solo instrument's changing register audible. It was Elgar's last completed large orchestral work.
