Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, L. 86
Claude Debussy
Work background
Researched classical background
Debussy's prelude responds freely to Mallarme's poem about a faun's memories and desires during a hot afternoon. A winding flute phrase opens a score in which harmony, color, and recurring fragments create a suspended sense of time. Debussy described an evocation of the poem's atmosphere rather than a literal scene-by-scene illustration. Its later life as a ballet added another artistic interpretation.
Inspiration and creative background
Stephane Mallarme's poem L'apres-midi d'un faune is the documented literary source.
