Symphony No. 12, Luosto
Kalevi Aho
Work background
Researched classical background
Aho designed Luosto for an outdoor performance on the slopes of a fell in Finnish Lapland. A symphony orchestra, chamber orchestra and additional dispersed musicians surround the audience, with soprano and tenor soloists contributing wordless vocal lines. The spatial layout is part of the work's conception, so a conventional stereo recording represents only one way of experiencing its forces.
Inspiration and creative background
The commission specifically proposed music for the outdoor setting on Luosto fell.
