Symphony No. 9 in D minor
Anton Bruckner
Work background
Researched classical background
Bruckner's Ninth survives with three completed movements: a vast opening, a sharply driven scherzo, and an expansive Adagio. Their monumental scale is built from repeated shapes, sustained harmonic spans, and contrasts between instrumental groups. Bruckner worked on a finale but died before completing it. Performances ending with the Adagio and performances using a reconstructed finale therefore present different editorial choices.
A listening guide
Listen for the contrast between the scherzo's abrupt rhythmic blocks and the Adagio's long, slowly expanding phrases.

Forces: Large orchestra, including Wagner tubas
Composition: 1887-1896 (unfinished)
