Symphony No. 6 in D major
Antonin Dvorak
Work background
Researched classical background
Dvorak composed the Sixth for conductor Hans Richter and dedicated it to him. The four-movement work combines a broad opening, a lyrical Adagio and a scherzo based on the strongly accented Czech furiant. Its eventual first performance took place in Prague, while early publication called it the composer's First Symphony, a numbering superseded by the modern chronological sequence.
