Symphony No. 8 in D minor
Ralph Vaughan Williams
Work background
Researched classical background
Vaughan Williams gives each movement of his Eighth Symphony a different instrumental emphasis. A varied opening movement is followed by a scherzo for winds, a Cavatina for strings and a finale that expands the percussion colours. The changing forces make the orchestra itself part of the work's design, with sharply different balances of sustained melody, rhythmic motion and resonance.

Compare the winds alone in the second movement with the strings alone in the third.
