Symphony No. 1 in C minor
Anton Bruckner
Work background
Researched classical background
Bruckner's First Symphony exists in several authorial states, beginning with the score completed during his Linz period. It already uses the four-movement sequence that would remain central to his symphonic work. Later changes produced distinct Linz and Vienna performing texts. The 1891 Vienna version is a substantial return to an earlier composition rather than a separate numbered symphony.
