Symphony No. 7, "Seven Gates of Jerusalem"
Krzysztof Penderecki
Work background
Researched classical background
Penderecki wrote Seven Gates of Jerusalem for commemorative celebrations in the city. The large vocal and orchestral work uses biblical texts and makes the number seven part of its organization, most visibly through seven movements. Choral blocks, solo voices, and a spoken passage create different kinds of public utterance. Its title belongs to the composition's symbolic conception rather than to a literal musical tour of the gates.
Inspiration and creative background
The Jerusalem commission and selected biblical texts document the commemorative and sacred basis.
