Symphony No. 2 in D minor
Sergei Prokofiev
Work background
Researched classical background
Prokofiev wrote his Second Symphony in Paris for Serge Koussevitzky. It has two movements: a densely scored, rhythmically driven opening and a longer set of variations on a melody introduced by the oboe. The variations progressively enlarge the material before the theme returns. This contrast between force and a quieter conclusion is fundamental to the work's design.
