Symphony No. 1 in E-flat major
Alexander Borodin
Work background
Researched classical background
Borodin worked on his First Symphony while pursuing his scientific career and developing his craft with encouragement from Balakirev. Its four movements contrast a rhythmically active opening and light scherzo with a broad slow movement. The orchestral writing connects familiar Romantic models with the melodic and rhythmic interests that would continue through Borodin's later music.
A listening guide
Compare the scherzo's light motion with the more sustained third movement.
