Grosse Fuge, Op. 133
Ludwig van Beethoven
Work background
Researched classical background
The Grosse Fuge began as the last movement of Beethoven's Op. 130 quartet. Its scale and technical demands helped prompt publication as a separate work with a replacement finale for the quartet. Several contrasting sections transform related thematic shapes through tightly interlocked parts. Performances may present it alone, restore it to Op. 130, or use a later orchestral arrangement.
