The Animals emerged from Newcastle with a forceful approach to American blues and rhythm and blues. Eric Burdon's vocals and Alan Price's organ stood alongside Hilton Valentine's guitar, Chas Chandler's bass and John Steel's drums in the original lineup. Their repertoire ranged from the traditional House of the Rising Sun to Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood and We Gotta Get Out of This Place. Later changes led Burdon toward a reconfigured group and a more psychedelic direction.
