SZA was born in St. Louis and raised in Maplewood, New Jersey. A series of early EPs and collaborations preceded her major-label debut, Ctrl, in 2017. Her contemporary R&B uses conversational songwriting and subtle shifts in vocal phrasing, with spacious arrangements forming part of her early sound. She has also worked with performers including Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna. Those collaborations remain separately credited alongside the albums and songs issued under her own artist name.
